Meet the Artist
Janhavi’s creative journey began with architecture. While this field offered excitement, it also left her with a deep yearning for creative liberty and self-expression. After completing her B.Arch in 2005, Janhavi embarked on a quest to find her hidden creative passion, which led her to discover clay in 2013. Since that pivotal moment, she has devoted much of her time to creating one-of-a-kind pieces, conducting research, and teaching the fundamentals of ceramics. What began as an accidental discovery became a profound stimulus, driving her to delve deeper into the nuances of the art and explore the true science behind ceramics.
Architecture instilled in Janhavi a strong sense of aesthetics and design, which she soon realised influenced her perception of art. She often references elements of both built and unbuilt environments that resonated with her during her time designing spaces. Architectural spaces and details, visual imagery, textures, and patterns serve as an endless source of inspiration, keeping her connected to her roots in many ways. She finds herself particularly drawn to form, surface treatments, embellishments, colour, and patterns.
Clay is slowly becoming one of Janhavi’s primary mediums for communicating her emotions. When working with clay, she often responds to an inner emotion that manifests in the forms, surfaces, or as a collective response to the inspirational bits and pieces accumulated on her shelves over time. At the core of her work is the ceramic object, which carries associations with innocence, nourishment, flamboyance, maturity, turmoil, and transformation.
